4th of July trip

We took our first road trip with Evan since he was little this past week for the 4th of July holiday.  We headed back to the family farm in Kansas, which is typically about a 9-hour road trip.  We figured with extra stops for Evan it may be more like 10 hours, and we were pretty much spot on with that estimate.  We fed Evan his solid food meals on the go, and I sat in the back seat with him the whole trip except for during his nap times.  The main reasons for stops were to get gas, food for us, use the bathroom, change Evan, and nurse Evan.  And luckily nursing doesn't take near as long as it did when Evan was small.  Overall the road trips to and from Kansas with Evan went pretty well, although by the end of each (those last few hours or so) you could tell he was tired of the car seat.  Who wouldn't be really though?

The weather in Colorado the few weeks prior to our trip had been pretty oppressive, with high temperatures near 100 F most every day.  However, in Colorado the heat is usually a "dry heat" with fairly low relative humidity.  When we went to Kansas, however, we were still greeted by 100 degree plus days, only this heat was true sauna weather with really high humidity.  Thus, we spent most of our holiday indoors.  We sometimes got outside in the late evenings, but any other time it was just too hot, especially for a little one like Evan.

Due to the dry heat (and all the wildfires) in Colorado, there was a statewide ban on buying/lighting of fireworks, but that was not so in Kansas.  However, we didn't go overboard this year and just bought some parachutes for the kids and some other simple ones.  We celebrated the 4th the Onaga way, with a  small-town fireworks show on Tuesday night (July 3) and a BBQ dinner at the fairgrounds before that.

We also went to visit Grandpa in the nursing home, and got some pictures of all of us.  This time our four generation picture isn't missing anyone...since my Dad is back from Africa! :)

Grandpa sure seemed happy to watch Evan. :)

The whole bunch! (minus John, our photographer...)

Four generations! (Pardon Evan's raspberry...he was copying John, who was doing raspberry/trills to get Evan to look at the camera!)

My cousin and her two young kids (one of which is about 10 days older than Evan) came and visited one day too.  We went to the park for a (short, due to the heat) picnic.

Rylan with Evan during our picnic. (Yes Evan is feeding his face during this shot!)

While I didn't spend much time outside, what little time I did I must have been prime meat, as I got a few nasty and itchy bites. One in particular got really nasty, and may have even been a spider bite.  I've still got it, though the redness seems to be finally going down and it's not nearly as itchy as it was this past weekend!  Speaking of bugs, lightning bugs were one bug that was a nice sight, since we don't have them in Colorado.  They are always a sign of summertime on the farm to me!

The other notable thing about our trip was that Evan had his first fever.  It started as a low-grade fever on Tuesday morning, then overnight Tuesday into Wednesday it spiked to 102.6.  We called the 24-hour hotline for our doctor's office and given he had no other major symptoms of illness they suggested we monitor it for a few days.  Needless to say, that night was pretty rough until the baby ibuprofen kicked in again, as Evan was so tired he'd fall asleep but then wake back up in a scream a few minutes later.  That cycle continued for at least an hour if not more, and he ended up sleeping with us in our bed the rest of that night.

He ran 100-101F temps the next two days, so we decided to take him in to the local Onaga clinic before we hit the road to come home on Thursday morning (his 11-month birthday).  It took awhile for us to get squeezed in, but he ended up seeing my old doctor from when I was a little girl (Dr. Walsh).  While his ears looked fine and he didn't have strep, he did have a red throat, so he got put on antibiotics for the first time.  This delayed our trip home by at least 3 hours, so it was a late night for us by the time we pulled into our driveway.   All in all, it was good to see grandpa and all the family back there, as well as to see the farm in summertime...mosquitoes (or whatever else bit me), lightning bugs, and all. :)

I'm really impressed that it's his first fever! I think we've done the antibiotic thing maybe 5 or 6 times this last year- ugh. Hope he's feeling better!
