The two YEAR update

Well, we've done it.  We've witnessed the transition away from baby and even young toddler into little boy.  Evan is now 2 years old and seems so grown up to us.  We were just looking back at his newborn pictures yesterday, in part to reminisce now that he's 2, but also to prepare for welcoming our new baby...reminding us of those precious first moments we had with Evan as a newborn.  It was amazing to look at those photos and then look at him, sitting in front of the TV watching the movie "Cars", which he loves now, by the way.

Firsts:

-First haircut!
-First time Forward facing in the car seat!  The true first time was on our drive to Kansas and soon after we started the trip he started running a fever and was sick, so we reversed it to back-facing for a few more weeks (just to get everything back to normal), but it is now forward facing again and he's loving it!
Also sporting his new "Cars" sunglasses...

-First hot dog eaten with a whole hot dog in a bun
-First time riding his tricycle (though he can't reach the peddles and so we just push him on it, however he seems to get bored of that quickly and just wants to walk)

Growth and development:

Evan wears size 6 shoes, 24 month/2T clothes, and size 5 pampers.  We will get a current weigh in and height on Thursday at his 2-year check up, but I'd say he's probably around 28-29 lbs (based on what our scale reads when he steps on it).

We are thinking that Evan may be teething again to get in his final set of molars.  He chews on his finger a lot lately, and I was told they are sometimes called "two year molars", so they'd be right on schedule if so.  And maybe that would explain some of his middle of the night wake ups again?  (He usually wakes up crying for us, well usually Daddy, at least once per night about 4-5 times per week...we can usually get him back to sleep by talking to him through the monitor though).

He knows (and can say) his first and last name!  However, when he says it, he puts an "s" at the end of Evan.  He doesn't do that when he just refers to himself as "Evan", so I'm guessing that's just him getting the "s" sound in his last name confused when saying it all together.  He still refers to himself as "Evan" in the third person, and seems to really have "me" and "you" confused.  He says them as we would use them when we talk to him.  So, for example, when he says "help you", he means "help me", and vice versa when he uses the word "me".  He also is starting to show us that he knows a lot of people by name.  From family members to his friends, he talks about people and/or names them when he sees pictures of them.

Mealtime:

He seems to want to eat everything himself these days.  And he wants things "big", as in not cut up for him.  Sometimes he wants to use a spoon or a fork, other times he just holds the utensil in one hand while he gobbles up the food with his available hand.  I think in this latter instance he just wants the food and knows it takes him too long to do it with a utensil.

He loves eggs and baby oatmeal for breakfast, and has that pretty much every day.  I'm eating eggs every morning with him, since it's good for me right now during my pregnancy. I'm thinking we'll try to eat eggs a little more sparsely after baby comes though.  He likes yogurt now though (just plain Greek yogurt), so that will be one breakfast staple I hope to get him transitioned to.  He also still loves fruit.  He tried kiwi fruit this past month and seemed to like it.  He's loving fresh peaches and nectarines, which are in season now.  But berries (raspberries in particular) are still his favorite.  We hope to get an allergy test at his 2-year check up and see if he really is allergic to strawberries.  I hope not, because I'm sure he'd love them too if we'd let him have them.

Eating yogurt at breakfast...without his spoon.  In fact, he thought he'd try and drink it at one point! Case and point about him choosing to not use utensils at times!

Sadly, he loves junk foods.  He loves to have chocolate milk, cake, and ice cream.  In fact, lately it seems he would probably be willing to eat nothing but cake and ice cream.  Having his birthday party this past weekend didn't help either, as he had lots of cake.  He asks for cake any time of day...even at breakfast time!

"I want that one!"  (He did this for every piece of cake Papa cut until he got his!)
"mmmmm.....cake!"
Playtime:

Evan still loves to play with his train set and do puzzles.  He can now color match each of his caterpillar "gears" and he is starting to learn how to put his train tracks together himself (but he still asks for help).

Evan loves playing with (and throwing!) balls of any kind and size.  He recently started sitting on them and saying "bouncy bouncy bouncy", so we took the hint and got him a hopper ball for his birthday.  The one I ordered was the smallest I could find, but it's still too big for him so we have to help him bounce on it.  But he seems to love it!  He got a lot of other great toys for his birthday too, such as a Bilibo that he likes to have us help him spin in, some puzzles, and a caterpillar crawling tunnel.  He's been enjoying them all!  (I'll post more about his birthday party soon...)

Taking a short break from spinning in his Bilibo to snap a photo

He also loves pushing around his Tow Mater riding toy (he pushes it more than he rides it these days!), which unfortunately for me includes pushing it into my feet most times.  After I give him one warning, if he does it again it gets taken away.  That toy does spend a good deal of time on top of our table (out of his reach) due to this rule.  (Let me tell you...that thing running into bare feet hurts!)

Along that line, he is definitely testing us more and more.  When we tell him the consequence for something he's doing, it pushes it right to that limit or even beyond such that he sees the consequence a lot (i.e. toys being taken away, or in some circumstances getting a spank).  He seems to completely ignore when I tell him to stop doing something or "don't do that" or no.  He also has started whining a lot.  Especially when he thinks he's not going to get something his way.  Instead of just saying he wants X, he just starts whining.  I have to tell him that I don't understand his cries and whines and that he needs to tell me what he wants with his words.  Sometimes that works.  Sometimes.

Speaking of crying, he's also started crying a LOT when we leave him at daycare!  Is there some kind of 2-year-old regression when it comes to separation anxiety?  Either way, he's got it.  I hope it doesn't last long as it is really hard to leave him when he's holding onto your leg wanting hugs and begging for you not to leave.

And in other news...Evan got to spend more time with his cousins this past month (when we went to Kansas for my grandfather's funeral).  He certainly loves hanging out with them!   During the visit he got an early taste of birthday celebrations since we celebrated his cousin Donovan's birthday on the trip.    Of course the cake was his favorite part (see earlier)!

I'm so proud of my two-year-old boy!  And I'm looking forward to having a fun and special family day with him today!

Love that last photo! Nora says stuff like "mommy help you" when she means "help me" too. I don't know what it is about the sudden separation anxiety but it makes me feel better to know we're not the only ones going through it!
