Evan's first haircut experience

As Evan was nearing the 2-year mark, we decided it was finally time to cut his blonde locks.  Besides the fact that his hair was starting to get into his eyes and the fact that the hair over his ears was getting so long that it would form what I called "wings" over his ears, he would also sometimes complain about "fuzzies" on his neck, which we think was his long hair back there.  So we found a place that had fun "chairs" to sit in and that specialized in kids cuts, designated an evening that John and I both were free and scheduled his first hair cut.

This photo, that I had taken a few days before we got his haircut, also helped me realize just how long his hair was getting!

Evan enjoyed playing with the train table when we arrived and was ready to get in the plane chair (he chose it!) when it was time to get started.  But from the moment we tried to get the cape on, he started to realize something about this wasn't just about having fun "flying a plane".  He began to whine and want down, while she started just cutting away.  How she was able to do that with a child that didn't sit still is beyond me!  We used a number of methods for distraction with him...the best were letting him squirt the water bottle (which he got all of us and did quite enjoy that), letting him play games on John's cell phone, and there were a few moments where he watched the movie that was on the TV in front of him.  Then the last parts of the cuts were done while he was down playing with the train table again.

"Yes, this is awesome, I get to fly a plane!"

"Wait, what is happening!?  This was a trick!"

Had certainly had a variety of unhappy moments...

Distraction #1: squirting everyone with the water squirt bottle, including the hair stylist!  She was a good sport and did whatever it took to help him through the experience!

Distraction #2--playing games on John's cell phone

"What do you think Mom?  Maybe needs a bit more off the ears so I don't get wings anymore?"

When it was time to go, he wanted to help her sweep and didn't want to go until we said we'd go ride the choo choo (a train that ran around the shopping complex we were at).  However, we went to have dinner first, but he did get his choo choo ride as well as some ice cream (frozen yogurt really) after that.  All in all, not a bad evening for a little kid if you ask me, and when I asked him if he had a fun evening, he said "yes".  :)

Helping clean up!
