Evan's 6th Birthday

Yesterday was Evan's 6th birthday!  He woke up to the house decorated with a few banners and balloons, and his gifts from us (and a few other family members/friends who had not made it to his birthday party last weekend) displayed on our couch.  He had been asking if we would decorate the house for him and set his gifts out, which is what we've been doing for several years now.  I guess it's a full blown tradition now!  And it was all we had time for since we decided to leave on our summer vacation road trip on his birthday too.  We figured if we started the day in our home, we could do gifts and such, and then hit the road.

We had already gone out for dinner of his choice the night before--he chose Chic-Fil-A, and wanted his own spicy chicken burger to himself!  He'd been asking for a chicken burger (instead of nuggets) for awhile now, but they are quite large and don't have kid-sized versions, so I'd been declining.  Therefore, he's always just gotten a few bites of our sandwiches.  Yet, this time, for his birthday, he got his own.  Did he finish the whole thing?  No way, but he made pretty good progress.

Taking his first bite of his very own spicy chicken burger!

After we finished dinner, a big storm blew in, so we had to load into the car quickly and as we started driving away it was hailing and raining and very windy.  We pulled into a gas station with an overhang to wait it out.  The kids were kind of scared, as they really haven't been out in a storm before.

After we got home Friday night, it was a crazy rush to pack bags and get ready for our trip the next morning.  Yet, we wanted to Skype with Nanna so she could see Evan on his birthday (after all it was already Aug 5th in Australia!) and so Evan could open his presents from her while she was able to watch.

Evan got his very own camera! (and a new fidget spinner that glows in the dark and a book!)

After the kids were in bed, I started the decorating and John blew up balloons.  Having his presents set out when he wakes up really makes his birthday feel like Christmas I think!

What a spread!

Evan slept in pretty late on his birthday morning.  In fact, we had to wake him up so we can get the party started and get going on our road trip!  He walked out of his room with sleepy eyes to find balloons and birthday banners on the stair railing and landing outside his room, then came downstairs and got excited at the sight of his presents.  He made no short work of opening them all, and was so excited to see what he got (baseballs, football, a football throwing target, a new light up Star Wars backpack, another new fidget, a slip n slide, and new light-up legos!).

Showing me how old he is now! It takes two hands!

We hit the road a few hours later, and while sitting in the car for a long drive wasn't tons of fun for our birthday boy, he got spoilt with lots of Doritos and other snacks that he likes.  And he had an absolute ball taking pictures out the window with his new camera. He took photos of everything.  He took a nice picture of me and John as we were packing up the car too (he told us, "pose for a family photo!").  Then after he felt like there wasn't anything interesting to take photos of, he started making his own videos with the camera.  Boy, are those silly (filled with lots of fart sounds and/or him saying potty words like "poop" and "fart"...could he be any more of a boy!?!).  And then the camera memory was full...but he also liked the camera because it has games on it!  He played lots of games on it too.

Hitting the road with our birthday boy/photographer!

Plus, we made a stop at a playground, which he had fun at, and then we got to our hotel for the night and there was a pool!  He got to go swimming and he practiced cannon balls and seated dives off the side of the pool. Then we finished the day with cake.  Well, actually, he didn't want cake, but he wanted ice cream!  I've noticed lately he hasn't been a big fan of cake, so we let him pick out his own ice cream and we put the candle in that instead! He wanted chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream (which he had just had for the first time a few weeks ago at a friend's birthday party). And since we were in our hotel room, he (yes, this was all Evan!) decided we shouldn't light the candle, even though I'd made a special trip out to get a lighter, because he was worried about it making the smoke alarms go off! So we sang him Happy Birthday and he pretended to blow out the candle afterward and we called it good!  Happy Birthday to my sweet boy!

Our boy is 6!
