Evan's been riding his 12-inch bike since he turned 4 years old. We probably should have gotten him a bigger bike for last summer, but we just raised the seat on his 12-inch bike and he seemed fine. However, over the past year he's been starting to look really big for that bike and we knew it was time for a bigger one. We wanted to get one with a hand brake so he could learn how to use hand brakes, but ideally one with coaster brakes too (so he could use those in a pinch since he was used to that). We opted for a 20-inch bike, since he was really just tall enough for one, instead of a 16-inch. John did a lot of research on that, as well as what brands are pretty good. We looked online for used bikes for several months, and then we finally found one that worked out and met our needs a few weeks ago.
Evan had saved money he'd gotten for birthdays and Christmas and had $30 which he said he wanted to spend on a new bike. We decided we'd chip in the rest, and were hoping to find a good used bike between $50-80 or so. The one we got was $60, so it was a perfect 50-50 split between us and Evan. When John brought it home, Evan was more than ready to give John his cash to get his "new" bike. And boy, Evan loved it...and still does. I've heard him say that under his breath a few times, "I just love my new bike." Even though he's just barely tall enough to be able to put his feet down (just the tip toes can touch) when he stops, he just hopped right on it, wobbled a bit, but stayed up and kept going. He loves the hand brake too. And the kick stand. At first he kept calling the kick stand the "hand stand" (probably confused from gymnastics!). He can get going much faster on this bike now than he could on his 12-inch, and I think he really likes that. He looks so much bigger riding this big bike too. Certainly becoming a big boy before our eyes!
