A whole bunch of Evan stories: Part II

Soccer is in the air
Evan has really started to enjoy soccer! We decided not to put him in a soccer program this spring because we were a little bit feeling like our schedules were already full with two days a week of swimming lessons.  However, Evan and John and I (and even Emma too!) have started kicking a soccer ball around in the backyard. And now almost every day Evan's asked me to be able to go in the backyard and play soccer. He's learning how to do throw ins, drop kicks, dribble the ball, and try to aim for goals. Although we don't really have any cones or a goal for him to really visualize what he's aiming for, so we're going to try to get something like that to help him out. And then once autumn soccer season comes around I think he'll definitely be ready to join a team. The big question will be is if we put him on a U4 (under 4) or U5 (under 5) team. The league that I'm looking at has a birthday cutoff of July 31st. That means Evan will be 6 days too young for that U5 team, but he'll be just that much older for the U4 league. I think it'll depend on what kind of skills he's developed over the summer as to if we want him to play with younger kids or if we think he can keep up with the kids that are really more his age anyway.

An age of independence
Evan is starting to be more independent!  He is keeping his pants dry at night and all day.  He is now also getting himself dressed and undressed too.  He really prides himself in these things as well.  In fact, he doesn't let us watch him get dressed, yet he always comes to show us his fully dressed self with a big smile of pride on his face (and then I usually give him a big hug).  I am really proud of him too, and relieved that in our busy mornings I can lay out his clothes and let him take care of the rest.  Well, most of the rest.  He still struggles with his socks and he also can't do his buttons or snaps yet, but it's such a push in the right direction.  I told him that it'll be good for him to be able to do these things on his own so he can start school, and so now he usually asks me "does this mean I can go to school now?" after he comes to show me how he dressed himself.  He also gets his own waffle out of the freezer and puts it in the toaster.  He lets us take it out still (which is our rule since it is hot and we don't want him burning himself on the toaster!). Morning time is getting just a little bit easier thanks to him becoming more independent.  He is really becoming a big boy!

Daddy's little helper
Evan also likes to help out with chores, especially the outdoor chores (like mowing, and blowing the grass, etc).  I hope his eagerness for this doesn't go away, because I'm pretty sure he'll be in charge of some of these chores when he gets older!

Outdoor play
Speaking of outdoor chores, Evan loves to go outside (not just to play soccer!).  He wants to blow bubbles, play with water, or play/dig in the dirt.  He also likes to have a fire in the fire pit and roast marshmallows.  The last time we did this, however, he burned his finger on his marshmallow stick! :(  He had been holding it over the fire roasting his first marshmallow of the night, but when he took it off the fire he touched the stick not realizing how hot it would be.  He was in bad shape for about 5 minutes or so, but then spent the rest of the night enjoying roasted marshmallows and smores.  I think he learned a very important lesson from that though. :(  On a happier note, he's getting quite good at blowing bubbles.  He can sometimes even catch them on the wand.  What a fun and yet simple pleasure!

Ice Cream
We used to call the Ice Cream Truck the "music truck" when Evan was little.  Then everything changed last summer when John suggested we get ice cream from it.  Now, of course, when Evan hears the music playing he knows it's the ice cream truck and wants ice cream.  We haven't gotten any yet this summer, but just the other night Evan got to have a "little drummie" ice cream cone for the first time.  He was beyond excited!  And he did a really good job eating it too!  Emma had hers turned upside down and all around, but Evan kept his level, right side up, and didn't drip or drop anything!  He even ate the cone without too much mess!

Getting bigger
Evan is just starting to get too big for his size 9 shoes, so it's time to move him into size 10!  Also, he's really starting to get too big for more of his size 3T clothes, so I've started buying a lot of new (well, mostly used) 4T clothes.   After all, in less than two months, he'll be four years old!!
