Evan's first solid food

A week ago Monday (Jan 16) was a holiday for me, and so after having gotten all of the necessary supplies at the store over the weekend, having an extra day off gave us the time to give Evan his first solid food!  He's been eyeing us as we eat a lot lately, seeming to really want whatever it is we're eating or drinking.  He also has been making more chewing motions with his mouth, so we figured he was ready.  For the supplies, we already had the high chair and some plastic food bowls, but we had to get some soft plastic spoons and the rice cereal itself.  I chose organic whole grain brown rice cereal--I'm all about my baby eating well! :)

We stirred up the runny mixture according to the directions for the first feeding, which really was mostly breastmilk with a little bit of added consistency from the cereal.  This was good for his first feeding, since he was then mostly able to drink it off the spoon.  Eventually we'll thicken up the mixture as he gets better at eating from a spoon.

Clean, and hungry, but a little unsure what's going on.

A little bit of each "bite" would run down his chin thanks to the tongue reflex.

Of course, he still has a bit of the tongue reflex that pushes everything back out of his mouth, so he got a little messy on his face.  I'm sure future meals with other foods will be even messier, however, so this was a fairly clean experience overall.  And in the end, he seemed to enjoy it and was quite happy to have been finally allowed to eat something!

After his first solid food...success!
