A weekend ago (June 22nd) was the Longmont Air Expo, and John took off work so we could enjoy a family day at our local airport. It was a brutally hot day, so we didn't plan to stay too long, but long enough for John to check out the static displays, for Evan to check out the kids area, and for us to see some of the scheduled air show flights. Since the air show formally didn't start until noon, we didn't see too much of the latter, except for the kick off parachute jump with the American flag during the singing of the national anthem, and a jet car race down the runway (it was scary FAST!), as well as the beginning of a team of planes flying in formation all over the place. Prior to the official start of the show, there were plenty of planes taking off for Evan to enjoy, most of which were the parachute planes dropping hoards of people from the sky. Thus, Evan learned a new word that morning..."parachute", as they became a regular sight while we were walking around the static displays.
It actually turned out better for us to leave during the air show, because the kids area was not crowded anymore so Evan got a turn at "flying" the kid-sized airplane! :) Some other highlights for Evan were getting a balloon, a wooden toy plane, and these little sticks with propellors on the end that you spin in your hand to make fly (we call them little helicopters, while Evan just calls them "new toy"). I'm glad he got a balloon, though, because ever since we arrived at the show and he saw balloons at one of the tables he wanted one. However, those were not being given away. Later when John and Evan walked around (and let me rest in the shade) they found a stand giving away balloons.
