Evan is now 6 years old, and it is amazing to reflect on what all he has learned how to do and how much he's grown over the past year. This is a short snapshot of what he's doing these days.
His likes:
- Loves computer games and games on tablets, started playing Minecraft and was playing a Star Wars game on the computer too, then a car "soccer" kind of game
- Loves riding his bike, but trades bikes with neighbors because he loves the gears and double hand brakes on theirs so we'll need to upgrade his bike again soon I think
- Loves playing water (water slide, water squirters, etc), which has been something he's always loved over the years
- Dabbing, especially for photos. It's his favorite pose to strike.
- Is very interested in baseball right now. After getting his glove for his birthday he wants to play catch a lot, but his interest started showing up at Memorial Day weekend when we were at Papa's farm. He also likes to throw football with Daddy now too.
- Soccer. He's playing soccer again this fall, and he really looked forward to every game and practice (which there were two practices per week!).
- Favorite foods: Jimmy Johns style sandwiches (sandwiches with deli meat, mayo, and cheese, and sometimes with "salad"), mac n cheese, pizza, Chic-Fil-A, croissants, Doritos, popsicles, getting a chicken salad from Wendy's
- Favorite TV/movies: Lego Batman, Mia and Me,
- He loves to eat a big breakfast. Typically includes 2-3 Nutrigrain Eggo waffles (sometimes plain, sometimes with peanut butter) and a Toaster Strudel
- Fidget spinners. These little gadgets took the world by storm last spring, and Evan has been building a collection of them. He still finds them fascinating.
- He developed a strong interest in weather, especially tornadoes (the theme of his birthday party!) and looking at radar on my phone
- He also really got into eagles and hawks this summer, and spotted them in the sky a lot. He was very excited to see a bald eagle up close at the zoo.

His dislikes:
- Not being allowed to play computer or tablets (or being told his computer/tablet time is up)
- Potatoes (other than french fries), sausage, while he eats some veggies he does not do so consistently (typically doesn't want to eat them
- Feeling hungry (he's like the people in those Snickers commercials that just aren't themselves when they are hungry!)
- Brushing his teeth, and in generally, getting ready for school quickly (we say he's like a sloth, which has turned into him really liking sloths after watching some videos of them and thinking they are cute and funny)
Growth and Development:
Evan can read! It really is amazing all that he learned in kindergarten! Basics of math and counting to 100 and more, and how to read and write. His spelling will need work still, but he does a great job sounding things out and trying his best to write words on this own. His reading is really good. He can easily read level 1 books, with minimal help. However, he does not enjoy reading. (I guess he gets that from me!) I am hoping that as reading gets easier for him and the books to read get more interesting (the level 1 books are pretty boring right now with short and simple sentences) that maybe he'll enjoy it more. Though, right now if he sees a lot of words, he gets uninterested before he even closely inspects if they are words he can read. I think it exhausts him to think of reading so many words (thus why I hope as reading gets that much easier for him I hope he'll have less of that gut reaction to seeing lots of text).
Evan now is wearing size 6 clothes. Some size 6 pants are a bit long on him, but most all of his size 5 stuff is starting to look short/small. He has a few size 5 shirts and shorts he still wears though. He wears size 1 shoes. At his 6-year check up he was 46.2 inches tall (64%) and 47 lbs 6 oz (60%). He has no loose teeth yet (despite me thinking he may have at one time), though he really wishes he did. The dentist thinks he'll be about 7 before he loses his first tooth, but Evan knows a lot of friends who've lost teeth so he keeps hoping he will too.
He has gotten more particular about the clothes he'll wear. He won't wear shirts with collars and likes those with pictures on the front, especially super heroes like Batman or Spiderman. He also chooses his hairstyles for the day (if we have time or he lets us do anything with it), and typically likes a spiked in the front or mohawk spiked up style.
I just love seeing how much he's growing, especially his emotional and social developments. He is a deep thinker for sure, but sometimes is less willing to talk about his feelings or thoughts, but when he does I'm always so proud of his level of thought that he puts into things. He still doesn't have a super long attention span for some things (but for computer games he certainly could go all day!), but he is a good student at school and doing well and excelling in all of his subjects, especially math, so I can't complain! He is very sweet and caring, but he doesn't always show it. For example, he often won't tell me that he loves me after I tell him now. Instead, he'll nod his head acknowledging me, and that's it. However, when he does verbally express his love, it's that much more special to me now, and he expresses his feelings in other ways that I also find very precious. I love snuggling with him and getting big and long "good morning" hugs from him (or just anytime I feel proud of him and ask him for a hug). I can't wait to see what new things he be up to in the next year!
